CANON: Guild Wars 2

AGE: 6. Sylvari are a race who are "born" fully grown and have a well of shared experiences. He is considered an adult, and has been for most of his physical life.
BACKGROUND:
Detailed History
Links and bullet points version
PERSONALITY:
Asteffiel shows many of what could be considered characteristic sylvari traits. He's honest, direct, focused, eager to learn about anything, and lacks a solid sense of tact. All Sylvari wake from The Dream, so what use does he have for telling lies, or not getting right to the point. With so much in common right from the start, all new experiences are treasured, and seen as something to add to the Sylvari experience with - some future sylvari sapling may wake from the dream with a fragment of knowledge that he acquired. However, there are times when it is a bit too much - there are things one shouldn't tell others, even if you think them. He's also oddly literal - a favored sylvari song includes the line of 'Lift your voice with the first light of dawn', and Asteffiel has decided to take it so. He can be found at dawn, checking on and singing little songs to his plants.
His focus at times is almost entirely on his collection of potted plants. He spends far more time with them, and any other greenery nearby - the plants he and his twin brought to their desert guild hall, the naturally occuring flora, nearby choya. He definitely likes any sort of plant life better than the average person, assuming the average person is not a friend of one of his friends. His talents and focus on plants have an odd side effect - Asteffiel is quite skilled in growing his own clothes, and sometimes he can get starts to take in the ground after growing them off himself.
With the socially acceptable garments covered, he doesn't like to spend much on things that aren't plants, and plant supplies. What need does he have for a pair of shoes when his feet are mostly covered in bark already, he could buy a new set of herbs with that coin. His focus on plants did reach a point where, upon learning about the existence of cacti, it was all he would focus on. After hearing Facts of the Cacti for a solid month, despite Asteffiel never seeing one in person yet, he had gained a nickname.
While he is not interested in buying clothing, he is rather good at creating it. Focusing and doing fine needle-work is something of a soothing past-time for him, and he is not bad at the spinning of fibers into thread and weaving those into cloth as well, or repurposing of scraps into cloth. And despite how well he gets through many troubles, he does have a need for finding focus in something.
Perhaps being born shortly after the Pale Tree and the Dream were assaulted by Mordremoth set him up for a rough start. Asteffiel and Viliandre, for all they were not truly pod-siblings, shared a bond as close as if they did, and this helped them get through the first worrying month when the Pale Tree slept and barely responded to any, even the Firstborn. With the Pale Tree quiet, he didn't see any problem following strangers to see what it means to be Real Sylvari - following a stranger into the Nightmare Court, where sylvari try to match and overtake the hope and light of the Dream of Dreams with cruelty and darkness. While he has successfully not fallen into Nightmare and has recovered quite well from the cruel impulses of the court, so much violence and cruelty leaves a mark all the same. Following up on that, while he was getting back to a new balanced state of mind, an Elder Dragon comes calling, telling him that he should Listen, and Come Home, and Attack Those People, and He Is His. While Mordremoth doesn't get his claws into Asteffiel, he causes a lot of havoc in the Sylvari community. Even slaying him is not without a high cost. And then a god of fire and war manages to kill him. While Asteffiel has long since regrown the bark and leaf that had been scarred from the attack, the reminder of he had died is still there in other ways. While there doesn't seem to be any sort of therapist in Tyria, this plant could use one.
While he is mostly over his Nightmare influences, they have shaped his protective instincts. Asteffiel is very easily down with a murder, often offering it a few steps before it should be the preferred solution. Pairing this with his necromancy, however, leads to some very unfortunate urges. Why just kill the person who is harassing his friend when he could use the energy and mass of the death to make a minion. Less waste!
Fortunately, mostly due to enough times his friends have pointed out that will almost certainly get him in a great deal of trouble, these are not the sort of socially inappropriate thoughts he voices very often. He's a lot better at remembering which aren't okay to voice now a days. He may fidget like he absolutely wants to say something and then whisper it instead, but it is no longer at share-with-the-class volume. And he might be able to recognize and share that "You don't want to know my opinion, it might make you mad" or something of the like. He does still have trouble with names, particularly longer ones, and relies on nicknames, usually plant or nature themed, to keep track of faces.
Sometimes his actions still fall outside the realm of 'usually okay'. This could be a combination of the somewhat naive nature of a sylvari, even one who has been through A Lot, his list of traumas, and maybe just a little natural air-headedness. It most definitely is not fully acceptable for anyone to be out and about in just their underwear, but why should Asteffiel grow more than courtesy leaf before taking his morning rinse anyway, he's going to get dirty tending his plants. Is it weird to walk in on a human taking a bath because he has a burning question? Absolutely, he's doing it anyway. Is this bed the bed of a couple? But one of them is his close friend, they won't mind him just flopping in nearby, right? Holding a conversation shows more of that air-headedness, or just a massive amount of word association leading to massive tangent jumps. A conversation that falls outside of his specific focuses is very likely to lose it's clear direction.
Somehow, despite the clear end of that cat in the curiosity saying, Asteffiel has not lost his. New things are definitely new things, and even though he died once, it wasn't fully dead! There was no Mists or moving on, so even that holds some new information still.
POWERS/ABILITIES:
Sylvari: He's a plant. While his body mimics a humans externally, there's no defined organ structure. He still needs to eat and sleep, he's omnivorous, and sunlight is, sadly, not a viable food source. Sylvari have no blood pressure, pulse, or heart, but do bleed sap when injured. If injured badly enough, they scar permanently, and they can regrow lost limbs, however never to full strength.
Sylvari can grow their own clothing out of themselves, which is to say if he's wearing leaves and petals as clothing, its actually grown out of him and is part of him. Removing the garments is as easy as dropping leaves in fall, and somewhat like cutting hair off a human. If his clothing is yanked on before he is ready to drop it, it will come free with a little sap, but doesn't hurt more than a pinch. Growing his clothes is a surge of growth, so he will be hungry after.
The Sylvari ability for growing plants out of themselves is not limited to their clothing – a notable npc goes from slender and long-leaf haired to stocky and cactus spines over the course of his 20 odd years. While Asteffiel is not likely to completely redesign himself, he can grow things other than his clothes.
Sylvari have a minor ability to grow plants better in soil as well. Most of their buildings and weapons are actually plants, grown and shaped into what they need. Easiest are seed-spitting turrets, or seeds that work like magical aromatherapy, but this does extend to things like giant maple-leaf tents.
Sylvari are vaguely empathic. This is mostly through their own connection with each other, the Dream of Dreams, however Asteffiel does tend to be affected by extraordinarily strong emotions in others.
Necromancy: Asteffiel gathers Life Force from nearby deaths, and it allows him to transform into Death Shroud – a specter - and use that well of additional life instead of his own. His use of dark arts does include blood magic for both injury and healing, of himself and others, and his magic often applies lasting detrimental effects – increasing the bleeding from wounds, or magically chilling foes. His magical abilities include laying magical "marks" on the ground, that function a little like traps.
He can also raise Minions. In previous games, I have allowed him use of only the Shadow Fiend, unless the area he was in had seen some form of major death (so most forms of soil allowed him to summon minions). All the other minions take a fleshy form.
Reaper: His necromancy has changed. He's learned how to use a greatsword, and how to infuse magic into his shouts. His spectre form has also changed, gaining a massive scythe.
Asteffiel's staff usage is entirely for channeling, and not for bo-staff like skills. He is comfortable with dual daggers as well as his greatsword for physical combat, with a passing familiarity of scepter.
Horticulture - Partially because he's a Sylvari, partially because he is fascinated with growing things, Asteffiel is very good at taking care of plants. He is better at flowers and herbs and small potted plants than crop plants.
Tailor : Asteffiel finds great comfort in working with clothing, even the cloth based clothing preferred by other races. He enjoys detailed embroidery most of all and has experimented with growing his own leaf-based clothing with embroidery like veins. He also makes use of his own various colored leaves to produce dye.
Artificer: The use of wood and metal to craft things like focuses, scepters, staffs and tridents. Many of the imbuements seem tied to specific types of Tyrian materials, but the ability to carve wood and mold small amounts of metal still holds.
